Johann Pfeiffer (coin engraver)

Johann Pfeiffer (born December 15, 1832 in Vienna ; † February 8, 1882 there ) was an Austrian engraver and medalist who worked as an Imperial and Royal coin engraver in his hometown.

Life

Johann Pfeiffer was born in Vienna on December 15, 1832 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . On the recommendation of the sculptor, medalist and engraver Joseph Daniel Böhm , he joined the engraving department of the Vienna Central Mint in 1852 . Because of his solid achievements, he was appointed 1st coin engraver at the main mint in 1870. His works include various stamps and numerous Austrian coins, but also various Lombard-Venetian coins, as well as various commemorative coins and medals. Pfeiffer died on February 8, 1882 at the age of 49 in his hometown of Vienna.
