Johann Sebastian Bach (painter)
Johann Sebastian Bach (born September 26, 1748 in Berlin , † September 11, 1778 in Rome ) was a German draftsman and painter from the Bach family .
Life
He was a son of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and thus a grandson of the composer and Thomas Cantor of the same name . Bach studied with Adam Friedrich Oeser in Leipzig , among others . In May 1773 he moved to Dresden and in February 1776 he moved to Hamburg, where his father was the city's music director. In September 1776 he went on a study trip to Rome, where he fell seriously ill soon after his arrival in February 1777. He died of the consequences of this illness, about which nothing is known.
Bach primarily created brush drawings of idyllic landscapes, mostly filled with people. His works show the influence of Salomon Gessner . Towards the end of his life he turned to the representation of humans and created historical and mythological scenes. He also created vignettes and illustrations for works by Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener and Christian Felix Weisse . In his time he was quite a recognized artist, and Lessing , among others , stood up for him.
Larger collections of his works can be found in Dresden and Leipzig as well as in the art collections of the Veste Coburg , the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Albertina in Vienna .
