Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener (born September 17, 1714 at the Wachau manor ; † March 22, 1771 in Dresden ) was a German writer and publicist of the Enlightenment .

Life

Coming from a respected family, he studied law and philosophy in Leipzig after attending school at the Fürstenschule Sankt Afra in Meißen . After completing his studies, he worked as a tax collector and from 1741 as a tax auditor in Leipzig. In 1753 he was called to Dresden as a consultant as part of his official work.

During his time in Leipzig he wrote articles for various magazines, mostly in satirical or essayistic form. He was often called the “German Swift ” because of his writing style , probably because he later approached the style of the English weekly magazines.

Rabener's prose satire in the form of short novels , letters , poems , as well as proverbs in which he satirically processed human misconduct, but also social grievances of the bourgeoisie , was widely published in magazines . He published his publications in the 1750s under the title Collection of satirical writings as a collection that would ultimately comprise four volumes. This publication had several editions within a few years and was also published in Danish , French , English and Swedish, among others .

Gottlieb Wilhelm Rabener died in Dresden in 1771 after a stay at a spa in Karlsbad could not help his poor health. He was buried in the Johanniskirchhof . His grave has not been preserved. Rabener has been forgotten today. In Dresden, the addresses of the tax offices Dresden North and Dresden South are named after the tax collector: Rabenerstraße 1.
