Sebastiani's work includes, among other things

  • an oratorical passion according to Matthew 26, 1 - 12,
  • the two-volume collection of sacred and secular polyphonic chants and unison figured bass songs based on poems by Gertraud Moller , called the Parnassus flowers (...) ,
  • at least one complete year of cantatas (lost),
  • the stage work Pastorello musicale ( Shepherd's Play in Love ) as the earliest surviving evidence of the occupation of a composer north of the Alps with the then still new genre of opera .

Many of Johann Sebastiani's works that were kept in the Königsberg library have been lost since the Second World War , including the year of church cantatas mentioned by Sebastiani in the preface to his St. Matthew Passion . The Pastorello musicale was rediscovered and reissued in 2001 in Vilnius by the Leipzig musicologist Michael Maul . Johann Mattheson mentions Sebastiani in The Perfect Capellmeister and cites a song from the Parnaßblumen collection as an example of the melismatic spelling in the chamber style.
