Johann Sebastiani (composer)
Johann Sebastiani (born September 30, 1622 near Weimar , † 1683 in Königsberg ) was a German composer of church music , stage works as well as sacred and secular chants. According to Georg Christoph Pisanski , Sebastiani was in Italy for study purposes. From 1653 at the latest - possibly even earlier - he lived in Königsberg, where he was appointed Kapellmeister of the Elector of Brandenburg in 1661 .

Sebastiani's work includes, among other things
- an oratorical passion according to Matthew 26, 1 - 12,
- the two-volume collection of sacred and secular polyphonic chants and unison figured bass songs based on poems by Gertraud Moller , called the Parnassus flowers (...) ,
- at least one complete year of cantatas (lost),
- the stage work Pastorello musicale ( Shepherd's Play in Love ) as the earliest surviving evidence of the occupation of a composer north of the Alps with the then still new genre of opera .
Many of Johann Sebastiani's works that were kept in the Königsberg library have been lost since the Second World War , including the year of church cantatas mentioned by Sebastiani in the preface to his St. Matthew Passion . The Pastorello musicale was rediscovered and reissued in 2001 in Vilnius by the Leipzig musicologist Michael Maul . Johann Mattheson mentions Sebastiani in The Perfect Capellmeister and cites a song from the Parnaßblumen collection as an example of the melismatic spelling in the chamber style.
