Johannes Siegwald was a son of Johan Christian Clausen Dahl , received his first lessons in art from him and later trained in animal painting under Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Wegener .

After he had attended the academy in Dresden for three years , he went to London in 1851 , as Edwin Landseer's animal pictures captivated him, and from there also visited Paris. He took the best motifs for his animal pictures from Norway, his father's homeland, whose nature he carefully studied.
