Johann Spitzer (diplomat)

Johann Spitzer (* 1959 ) is an Austrian diplomat , former ambassador to Lithuania .

Career

Johann Spitzer studied law in Salzburg , followed by diploma studies at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna and at the Europa-Kolleg in Bruges.

His diplomatic career began in Budapest (Hungary) from 1987 to 1990 during the upheavals that led to the fall of the Iron Curtain . It was used abroad in Copenhagen (Denmark) until 1993 . After two years of service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna , where Spitzer dealt with questions of European integration, he was back in field work, 1995–1999 in Stockholm (Sweden) and then until 2005 as a legal adviser at the Danube Commission in Budapest. He then worked in the Foreign Ministry in Vienna on issues relating to EU relations with the Western Balkans. 2009–2013 Spitzer was Deputy Head (first assigned) at the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations Office in Geneva (Switzerland).

In August 2013, Johann Spitzer was appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the Republic of Lithuania , based in Vilnius . He worked there until December 2016.

Private life

Spitzer is partnered . In a social security matter, he lodged a complaint of discrimination with the European Court of Human Rights, which upheld him in 2010 and awarded 25,000 euros in costs and damages.
