Johann Westhauser

Johann Westhauser (born July 7, 1960 ) is a German cave explorer . He works as a technician at the Institute for Applied Physics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Speleology is not related to his professional activity.

Discoveries

The speleologist is an experienced researcher of the giant thing shaft cave in Untersberg , which he has already explored a few dozen times. Since 2002 he has been researching the cave in a team from the Bad Cannstatt Cave Research Group . He is one of their first-time visitors (tour from July 2002) and was one of the protagonists of this first phase of exploring the cave together with Lars Bohg, Jürgen Kühlwein, Anja and Thomas Matthalm, Ulrich Meyer and Marcus Preißner. He was also involved in further exploration of the cave, most recently in June 2014.

Westhauser has been a member of the Baden-Württemberg Cave Rescue Association since 1994 .

Accident June 2014

On June 8, 2014 01:30 AM (CEST) the then 53-year-old Westhauser in the huge thing cave in around 1000 meters depth was in a rock fall seriously injured by a falling stone. He suffered a traumatic brain injury . In an elaborate rescue operation, Westhauser was rescued from the cave on June 19, 2014 at 11:44 a.m., then examined on site and then transported by helicopter to the Murnau Clinic for further care , which he was able to leave healthy after about 2 weeks.
