The Berufsgenossenschaftliche Unfallklinik Murnau (BG Unfallklinik Murnau) is a large accident clinic of the employers' liability insurance association in Murnau am Staffelsee in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district . The Academic Teaching Hospital of the Technical University of Munich and the Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU) Salzburg is a specialist provider in the field of traumatology (accident medicine) in southern Bavaria.

history

initial situation

The professional associations were founded in 1884 in the course of the introduction of statutory accident insurance by Reich Chancellor Bismarck . The aim of the employers' liability insurance association has always been the preventive prevention of occupational accidents and illnesses, as well as rehabilitation "with all appropriate means" after possible insurance cases .

In order to fulfill this task it quickly became clear that this would not be possible without our own health care facilities . As early as 1890, today's accident hospital "Bergmannsheil" was inaugurated in Bochum .

Presumably in 1926 in Hohenaschau im Chiemgau a "Hohenaschau training camp for injured and recovered young workers a." Apprentices ”. This was handed over to the employers' liability insurance association in 1948 at the latest. Since this clinic, now known as the “BG special ward for treatment and care for accident victims”, quickly reached its limits, a location was sought for a new clinic to be built.

1950-1967

Since the planned construction project significantly exceeded the financial resources of a trade association, the association “Berufsgenossenschaftliche Unfallfürsorge e. V. “, in which all professional associations acted as carriers. On February 25, 1953, the Murnau Accident Hospital, which was then still known as the “Hermann Schramm House - Professional Association Accident Hospital with Special Ward”, was inaugurated. The house was named after the then chairman of the main association of industrial trade associations in Germany and Senator Hermann Schramm .

The focus at that time was on the rehabilitation of patients who had previously been treated in other hospitals. In addition, there were departments for corrective surgical treatment after unsatisfactory care in other hospitals, care and primary surgical care after accidents in the surrounding area. 250 beds were available for surgery, internal medicine and neurology.

After Alfons Lob was appointed chief physician in 1955, the focus of the clinic changed. More and more injured people were taken over early after their accident and cared for in Murnau. In the following years, the departments for anesthesia and orthopedics were added, and further departments had to be expanded according to the new range of services.

In 1967 a natural clinic near Murnau was taken over. From now on, exercise treatments for patients who no longer need wound care should be carried out in the “Hermannswies” outdoor station.

1967 – today

With the support of Ludwig Guttmann , who emigrated to England , Germany's first special department for spinal cord injuries was inaugurated in a newly constructed part of the building in 1969 . Also in 1969 the department for severe burn injuries and the first intensive care unit were inaugurated.

In 1975 the “East Extension” was inaugurated at the clinic, which had since been renamed the “Murnau Accident Clinic”. In the following years, the departments of “hand, plastic and maxillofacial surgery” and urology and neurourology were located here. In the same year, the vocational school for nursing assistants began its activity.

Between 1979 and 1987, new ward houses and functional buildings were built in several construction phases, and the original hospital building built in 1953 was completely demolished. In the course of this, the intensive care unit was expanded and new operating rooms were built. In 1989 the Department of Neurosurgery started its work.

In 1988 it was decided to build another extension. A new ward building was inaugurated in 1993, in which the department for spinal cord injuries met the greater need for beds. In the following year, after appropriate renovations, the "Hermannswies" outstation, which had been in existence since 1967, was incorporated into the now vacant part of the building. An intensive care transport helicopter was also stationed at the clinic in 1994 .

At the end of the 1990s, new operating theaters were opened again, or the old ones reopened after being modernized. In addition, in 1998 Germany's most modern center for hyperbaric oxygen therapy with an intensive care treatment center and a combined heat and power unit were inaugurated.

Between 1999 and 2000 the hangar for the intensive care transport helicopter was built and the two intensive care units were completely renovated. Various extensions took place between 2003 and 2011. Since 2007 there has been a cooperation with the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Clinic , which ensures internal patient care.

The nursing school started operating in 2012 .

In 2016 the new ward building with the "East" extension was inaugurated. This has increased the number of beds to 580. Expansions for the operating wing are being planned. However, there are no concrete plans for this yet.

In 2016 the clinic was transferred to the group " BG Kliniken - Clinic Association of Statutory Accident Insurance GmbH (KUV)". The carrier is now a holding company in Berlin.

organization

Care level

As a hospital with an employers' liability insurance association, the BGU Murnau was not included in the group of plan hospitals of the Bavarian hospital requirement plan. For this reason, no care level was allocated.

According to its own statement, however, the clinic covers trauma and reconstructive surgery services at the highest level of care.

cooperation

Since 2007, there has been extensive professional cooperation between the Murnau Accident Clinic and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Clinic, which is about 25 km away . At the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Clinic there is a department for "Trauma Surgery & Sports Orthopedics", which is run by the Murnau Clinic, but also the "Center for Internal Medicine" at the Clinic for Internal Medicine run by the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Clinic. Services from the field of internal medicine such as gastroenterology , oncology and cardiology, including a cardiac catheterization laboratory , can now also be offered at the accident clinic .

The trauma clinic is an academic teaching hospital of the Technical University of Munich and the Paracelsus Medical Private University in Salzburg .

The office of the Society for Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine (GTÜM) has been affiliated with the BG-Unfallklinik since 2002 .

Focus

Spinal surgery

Spinal surgery treats diseases and injuries surgically that are associated with no neurological deficits (such as paraplegia ). Around 300 patients are operated on each year. In addition to the method of dorsal stiffening, the possibility of ventral stiffening was also developed in Murnau . Intraoperatively, there is the option of radiological 3D imaging.

Spinal cord injuries

As one of 27 clinics nationwide with special departments for the treatment of paraplegics , including three in Bavaria, patients from the entire southern Bavarian region are transferred to Murnau after initial treatment in clinics close to the accident, and mostly surgically treated.

In addition to intensive medical care to stabilize vital functions, Murnau also carries out cross-sectional-specific early rehabilitation.

Joint surgery

The joint surgery department covers the spectrum of reconstructive joint surgery and replacement joint surgery. The focus is on arthroscopic surgery, sports traumatology and endoprosthetics. The BG Unfallklinik Murnau has been a certified endoprosthetics center for maximum care (EPZmax) since 2017.
