Johann Wilhelm Immanuel Heinsius (born July 28, 1768 in Leipzig , † October 1, 1817 in Gera ) was a German bookseller, publisher and bibliographer . He is the founder of the German national bibliography.

Life

Wilhelm Heinsius, the son of the Leipzig bookseller Johann Samuel Heinsius (1734–1807) and his wife Johanna Juliane Holle (1738–1804), joined the bookstore founded in Leipzig in 1725 by his grandfather Johann Samuel Heinsius (1686–1750) consistently continued the universal catalogs published in this company in 1748 and 1760. Thanks to such determination, his General Books Lexicon , published in four volumes from 1793–1798, or (later complete) alphabetical index of books printed in Germany and neighboring countries, formedthe basis of the German national general bibliography. The alphabetical order dominates in this directory in this way: Each title entry is preceded by the author's name or, in the case of an anonymous, the first information-bearing word in the work title. 1812–1813 Wilhelm Heinsius brought out a revised edition of his above-mentioned work for the entire 18th century. In 1805 he sold his bookstore to Enoch Richter, went to Gera and opened another Heinsius bookstore there in 1810 . Wilhelm Heinsius worked on the fifth volume of his bibliography in Gera. This contained titles from the years 1811–1815 and appeared in 1817. The project was continued by Wilhelm Heinsius' successors until almost the entire 19th century: In 1894 the nineteenth volume appeared, which contains titles published until 1892.

The Heinsius turns out today, when it comes to songs from the first half of the 18th century in the German-speaking, as an almost unrivaled treasure trove.

family

Wilhelm Heinsius married Charlotte Heun - Heinrich Clauren's sister - from Doberlug in 1792 . The writer separated from her husband in 1805 and two years later married the government calculator Friedrich Carl Kanitz .
