Johann Windsteig

Johann Windsteig (born February 2, 1925 in Niederabsdorf ; † October 17, 2005 in Vienna ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and ÖBB official. Windsteig was a member of the National Council and a member of the Federal Council .

education and profession

Windsteig attended elementary school in Niederabsdorf from 1931 to 1935 and then from 1935 to 1939 the secondary school in Vienna. In 1939 he moved to a secondary school in Vienna, which he graduated with the Matura in 1943 . After that, Windsteig was drafted into military service for two years, during which he spent a year in captivity in France.

Windsteig began his professional career in 1946 as an oil sampler and payroll clerk at the Soviet Mineral Oil Administration in Neusiedl an der Zaya and in 1948 became a scales clerk at the Hohenau sugar factory . He then worked from 1949 to 1950 as a clerk and seller in a timber shop in Hohenau and in 1950 worked as a road construction worker. After he had earned his living as an engine attendant at the Hohenauer sugar factory between 1950 and 1951, he became an employee of the Austrian Federal Railways in 1951, where he worked until 1983 as a dispatcher, training officer, managerial officer, works inspector, station manager and traffic officer in the transport department of the Vienna Federal Railway Directorate, last worked as Federal Railway Central Inspector (salary group IXb).

politics

Windsteig was Deputy Mayor of Niederabsdorf from 1955 and held the office of Mayor from 1955 to 1970. He was then from 1971 to 1975 executive councilor of the newly created community of Ringelsdorf-Niederabsdorf and from 1975 to 1987 mayor of the community. In addition, he was district chairman of the SPÖ Gänserndorf, member of the regional party executive of the SPÖ Lower Austria and vice-president of the Car, Motor and Cyclists Association Austria in Lower Austria. Furthermore, Windsteig was involved in the union and was a member of the Gänserndorf district school council. Windsteig was a member of the National Council from March 31, 1970 to November 4, 1971, then moved to the Federal Council from December 16, 1971 to May 18, 1983 and was again a member of the National Council from May 19, 1983 to November 30, 1987.

recognition

The multi-purpose hall in Ringelsdorf-Niederabsdorf has been called Johann-Windsteig-Halle since June 2020.
