Johann Witt (politician)

Johann Witt , also called John Witt , (born January 1, 1833 in Hohenwestedt , † March 18, 1915 in Hamburg ) was a German businessman , politician and member of the Hamburg Parliament .

Life

Witt went to California in 1852 and worked in Zanzibar from 1856 . From 1859 Witt was managing director of the Hamburg trading house O'Swald in Sansibar and worked for it in East and West Africa. In 1860 Witt was accredited as a Hanseatic consul in Zanzibar, later he also worked for the North German Confederation in his own position. In 1864 Witt founded a company together with Gottlieb Leonhard Gaiser , which appeared in Africa under the name Gaiser & Witt and which primarily organized the purchase of raw materials for Gaiser. O'Swalds took over the branches in Lagos and Whydah in 1870 . In 1876 Witt teamed up with Oscar Theodor Büsch (1851-1891) and founded the Witt & Büsch company , which continued the West African trade in Lagos.

From 1874 Witt worked mainly from Hamburg and was a member of the supervisory bodies of Hapag , Hamburgische Electricitäts-Werke and the Hamburg construction company. Witt was a member of the Board of Directors of Commerzbank from 1893 until his death.

Witt belonged to Hamburg's citizenship from 1874–1879 and 1883–1889. Most recently as a member of the "Group of the Right".

family

Witt married Amalie Charlotte Nicoline Hennings (1836–1913) in Hohenwestedt in 1861 . Her son married a granddaughter of Georg Friedrich Vorwerk .
