from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann von Merveldt (* in the 14th century; † February 14, 1440 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and canon in Münster .

Life

Johann von Merveldt came from the Westphalian noble family von Merveldt , which has its eponymous headquarters in Merfeld and from which numerous well-known personalities have emerged, including 22 canons in the dioceses of Münster , Paderborn , Osnabrück and Hildesheim . Johann was the son of Bernhard von Merveldt; his mother's name is not known. In 1413 he received a cathedral canonical in Münster and also occupied the position of pastor in Rorup . From 1433 he was provost of St. Mauritz in Münster . Two days after his death, the St. Mauritz chapter decided to appoint Bishop Heinrich as elector, because according to a rumor the cathedral chapter had received papal instructions that the provost could only be elected from among the cathedral chapter. John's epitaph stood in the Münster Herrenfriedhof and was badly damaged by the Anabaptists .
