Life

Origin and family

Johann von Merveldt came from the Westphalian noble family von Merveldt , which has its eponymous headquarters in Merfeld and from which numerous well-known personalities have emerged. The family provided 22 canons in the dioceses of Münster , Paderborn , Osnabrück and Hildesheim . Johann was the son of Johann von Merveldt zur Merfeld and his wife Elsebe Ketteler zu Neuassen , sister of the Paderborn cathedral provost Gisbert Ketteler . Johann's brother Gottfried was canon in Münster from 1514 to 1534. His sister Petronella was married to Arnd von Raesfeld zu Hameren, whose son Gottfried von Raesfeld was dean and important clergyman.

Act

On October 7, 1525, Johann von Merveldt received the cathedral praise from the late canon Georg von Berninghausen. He took possession of it in the Johanniskirche in Billerbeck and was emancipated. As early as April 12, 1526 he renounced in favor of the future Bishop Wilhelm Ketteler . He also renounced his office as pastor in Senden and his first marriage was the widow Dorothea von Romberg. His second marriage was to Anna Valke. Johann had a legitimate son of the same name who was later a judge in Dülmen. The sources do not provide any information about his further life.
