Johann of Montfort-Castres
Johann von Montfort (French: Jean de Montfort ; † December 1, 1300 in Foggia ), was Count of Squillace and Lord of Castres , La Ferté-Alais and Bréthencourt . He was a son of Philip II of Montfort and Johanna von Lévis-Mirepoix.
After the death of his father on the crusade of 1270 , Johann took over his legacy. He belonged to the French nobility in the Kingdom of Sicily , who had established themselves there since the conquest of Charles of Anjou . He supported his cousin Guy de Montfort in his rehabilitation after he had murdered the English prince Henry of Almain in 1271 . In 1273 Johann took over the office of royal chamberlain. After the outbreak of the Sicilian Vespers in 1282, he took part in the fight against the King of Aragón. From 1285 he stood by the regent (captain general) Robert von Artois , who ruled the kingdom of Naples during the absence of King Charles II . After Robert von Artois left for France in the autumn of 1291, Johann was appointed his successor in the office of captain general of the kingdom and thus assumed the highest position in the state at the side of the king.
Johann was married three times:
- with Isabella Meletta, daughter of the chamberlain Manfredo Maletta and great-granddaughter of Emperor Frederick II ;
- with Giovanna di Fasanella, daughter of Pandolfo di Fasanella;
- with Marguerite de Beaumont, daughter and heiress of Pierre de Beaumont, Count of Montescaglioso .
Since he had no children, his French possessions fell to his sister Eleonore and her husband, Count John V of Vendôme ( House of Montoire ). The county of Squillace fell to the Sicilian-Neapolitan crown.
