Johann von Wesel

Johann von Wes (s) el , (also Johannes de Wesalia , Hanns vom Hain , actually Johann Ruch (e) rath von Oberwesel , (* 1425 in Oberwesel , † 1481 in Mainz ) was a late medieval theologian.

Life

He studied from the winter semester of 1441/42 at the University of Erfurt, where he received his Magister Artium in 1445 , and then teaching and learning for eleven more years to complete his degree in theology as a licentiate and doctorate in theology on November 15, 1456.

From 1456 to 1457 he was rector in Erfurt. Around 1460 he went to Mainz (?) As a preacher (as early as 1460 he was attested as a canon in Worms). From 1463 to 1477 he was cathedral preacher in Worms.

Teaching

His "Disputatio adversus indulgentias" as well as the text "On the Authority, Duty and Power of the Spiritual Shepherds", which is directed against the claims of the papacy, resulted in the removal and transfer as cathedral pastor to Mainz in 1477 and in 1479, after imprisonment in the barefoot monastery, the later Jesuit monastery, his summons before a heretic court in Mainz, which the papal Grand Inquisitor Gerhard von Elten moved to revoke (all of his writings were burned); Nevertheless, Johann remained in prison for two years until his death in 1481 in the Augustinian monastery.

Luther by no means stood on the ground of Johann von Wesel with his theses.
