Johanna Benson (born February 17, 1990 in Walvis Bay ) is a Namibian runner and Paralympic athlete . With an infantile cerebral palsy , she starts in classification group T37. Benson is a gold medalist in the 2012 Summer Paralympics and a participant in the 2016 Summer Paralympics , where she failed to win a medal.

Life

Benson was born in Walvis Bay and attended Duinesig Primary and Kuisebmond Secondary School.

She started running and took part in national competitions in Namibia. After being called to the Paralympic Team of Namibia, she attended the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London . There she won the gold medal over 200 m and a silver medal over 100 m. For Namibia it was the first gold medal given by an athlete to take part in the Olympic or Paralympic Games. After the success, Benson received N $ 170,000 from the government of her home country , a house in her hometown of Walvis Bay and a diplomatic passport. In addition, a street was named after her.

In 2012 she was nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards .
