Life

Only a few biographical information can be found about Johanna Eck. It is known that she lived in Berlin as the widow of a soldier from the First World War . Through her husband, she was known to a Jakob Guttmann, who was deported as a Jew in 1943. She initially offered his son Heinz shelter in her apartment from the end of February 1943, later found him another place to stay and continued to provide him with ration cards. Johanna Eck also hid Elfriede Guttmann, who was persecuted as a Jew, and who was able to provide her with new papers, as well as the journalist Wilhelm Duesberg and the composer Helen Tobias-Duesberg, who found refuge with her as politically persecuted.

Quote

"The motives for my help? Nothing special. Basically I think like this: If my fellow human being is in an emergency and I can help him, that is my duty and responsibility. If I fail to provide this help, I am not fulfilling the task that is life - or maybe God? - demands of me. People, it would seem to me, form a large unit, and where they do one another injustice, they hit themselves and everyone in the face. These are my motives. "
