Johanna Felmayer

Johanna Felmayer (born July 27, 1927 in Innsbruck as Johanna Brunswik de Korompa ; † August 8, 2000 ibid) was an Austrian art historian .

Life

Johanna Felmayer studied art history and archeology at the University of Innsbruck and was awarded a doctorate in 1952 with a thesis on the baroque altars in North Tyrol. phil. PhD. She then gave lectures and guided tours at art exhibitions, including in Ambras Castle and the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum,  and wrote articles and radio reports on art-historical topics. From 1955 to 1994 she worked as a freelancer at the Institute for Austrian Art Research, which had been a department of the Federal Monuments Office since 1980 , on the creation of Innsbruck's art topography . From 1991 to 1994 she was a member of the cultural advisory board of the state of Tyrol and since the beginning of the 1990s in the specialist committee for art of the Ferdinandeum.

In her intensive preoccupation with the building history of Innsbruck's monuments, Felmayer was able to clarify open questions and correct incorrect attributions and traditional views. In this way she was able to show that, contrary to tradition, the area of ​​today's Wilten  and the right bank of the Inn had been continuously populated since Roman times. She campaigned for the preservation of buildings from the Wilhelminian era and later phases such as the New Objectivity in Innsbruck and achieved their protection status.

Johanna Felmayer was married and had two daughters.
