Therefore she was also considered the “grande dame” of the women's movement .

Life

Johanna Kohlund passed the teacher examination at the higher girls' school in Freiburg in 1899. As one of the first students, she finished her studies at the University of Freiburg with a doctorate in 1913 . In addition, Johanna Kohlund was one of five German scholars who completed their habilitation by the end of the Weimar Republic. Later she taught at a high school and campaigned for better educational opportunities for young girls. In 1968 Johanna Kohlund died in Freiburg at the age of 90.

Engagement in the women's movement

On November 12, 1918, the new right to vote for women was introduced in Germany. Kohlund took this as an opportunity to travel around a lot and encourage women to use the right to vote. She was very active in the women's movement , mainly in the “ Association for Women's Education - Women's Studies ”. She also attended women's congresses and conferences to exchange ideas with other emancipated women and to establish new contacts.

The teacher Agnes von Zahn-Harnack and the Reich MP Marie-Elisabeth Lüders founded the German Association of Women Academics in 1926 . Ten years later, Kohlund's initiative, the “Freiburg Female Academics Association”, joined this. In 1949 Kohlund founded a new initiative, the "German Women's Ring in Freiburg". This also advocated equality between women and men in society and is now one of the largest women's associations in Germany.
