Johannes Church (Lichtenberg)
The Johannes Church is the Evangelical Lutheran parish church in the city of Lichtenberg . The Lichtenberg parish is part of the Naila deanery .
history
The church was built below the castle before 1444. This year, as part of the Waldenfels feud, an army from Nuremberg besieged the city and used the church tower as a location for a cannon against the defenders in the castle .
The former branch church of Steben was raised to an independent parish in 1497. In 1528 Hans von Waldenfels introduced the Reformation . In 1531 he took part in the deliberations of the Schmalkaldic League as a margrave councilor .
The Protestant theologian Erhard Bodenschatz was born in Lichtenberg in 1576. He published the Florilegum Portense , a collection of 265 motets used by Johann Sebastian Bach .
In 1580 the nave was extended to the north and the choir was walled up. This created a Reformation hall building.
In 1611 Pastor Lang wanted to introduce the Calvinist doctrine, which the citizens opposed.
The church burned down in 1634 and it took 16 years to rebuild. Pastor Küffner (1690 to 1722) wrote essays on garden science, the parish garden, facing north in an unfavorable location, was at that time a destination for gardening enthusiasts.
Further fires in 1738 and 1814 destroyed the church again. All historical art treasures in the church fell victim to these fires.
A pulpit altar was erected in 1886, and two two-story galleries dominated the first Gothic and then Baroque church. During the renovations in 1936, the choir was reopened.
In 1931 two steel bells were given away to Alt Moshi on Kilimanjaro in Tanzania , the former German East Africa , where the German missionary Bruno Gutmann had established a Christian mission. This resulted in a partnership with the local Kidia community in 1990, in which the bells from 1931 are used.
From 1992 to 1996 the church was renovated, which is now a Lutheran hall again.
In 1997 the 500th anniversary of the Lichtenberg parish was celebrated.
Facility
During the last renovation until 1996, the chancel was modernized by the Munich artist Werner Mally . The altar table in the center of this sanctuary and the lectern are made of 120-year-old oak . The old font was integrated. Ten red pillars, which symbolize the ten commandments, support the gallery.
