Erhard Bodenschatz (* around 1576 in Lichtenberg ; † September 7, 1636 in Groß-Osterhausen ) was a German pastor , cantor and composer .

Life

Bodenschatz was cantor in Schulpforta from 1600 to 1603 and pastor in Groß-Osterhausen / Querfurt from 1608.

He composed numerous motets . His best-known work to this day is the collection of motets he edited, Florilegium Portense , which translates as “Schulpfortaer Flower Harvest”. In two parts, published in Leipzig in 1618 and 1621, it contains 365 motets by 58 composers and gives a good insight into the choir repertoire in the 17th century in the Thuringian-Saxon region. It is known that Bach , among others, knew and used this collection, because as Thomaskantor he ordered several copies of the work for the St. Thomas' Choir .

Bodenschatz died in Groß-Osterhausen, which was part of the Sittichenbach district of Saxony .
