The Johannes Nepomuk Chapel in Niedermauern

The Johannes Nepomuk Chapel in the Gries district of the Niedermauern fraction in the municipality of Virgen ( East Tyrol ). The chapel is located on the road between Virgen and Welzelach and is a listed building  ( monument list ).

history

In the place of the chapel there was originally a wooden wayside shrine, which was also dedicated to St. John Nepomuk . In 1818 the chapel was built in place of the wayside shrine, in 1820 a way of the cross, which is no longer preserved, was used. The chapel was only consecrated in 1836. In the course of the severe floods in 1965 and 1966, the chapel was badly damaged. The renovation took place in the years 1987 to 1988 and 1995 to 1996.

Building

The chapel has a rectangular floor plan with a polygonal finish, the wall surfaces being plastered white and provided with a yellow frame structure around the portal and window openings as well as on the wall edges, in the gable field and around the cove. The chapel is protected by a slightly curved, shingle-covered gable roof over a wide hollow. It also has a curved gable facade and a shingled roof turret with bell-shaped sound windows. The ridge is in turn protected by a curved tent roof with sheet metal covering.

The access to the chapel was originally through a now walled-up entrance portal on the southern outer wall of the chapel, in which there is still a lunette window . The gable field of the southern outer wall is set off by the protruding eaves strip of the roof, in which there is a closed niche. It houses a wooden figure of St. John Nepomuk from the middle of the 18th century, which probably comes from the original wayside shrine. Today's entrance is on the east side of the chapel, with the wide portal closed with a flat arch. The longitudinal walls are each pierced by a rectangular window.

Inside, the ceiling of the chapel was designed as a pressed barrel vault with belts that are located above a flat pilaster structure with profiled entablature. The altar area, which is one step higher, houses a Baroque altar with a pink stone setting and stucco ornament parts. While the cafeteria was designed in a simple way, the broad structure with columns and pilasters, cranked beams and a curved volute extension took place. The altarpiece in oil on canvas shows St. John Nepomuk with a martyr's palm and tongue on clouds and putti floating above his martyrdom in Prague . In the extract there is a representation of the Holy Trinity. There are also wooden figures of St. Augustine and Nicholas and two putti on the altar.

Other furnishings in the chapel include a lecture cross from the early 17th century, a Holy Spirit dove from the 19th century and a painting of the Lamentation of Christ with the Evangelist John from the 19th century. The two bells come from Brixen and Taufers.
