Peddocks Island is one of the largest islands in Boston Harbor in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . Since 1996, the 210.4 acres (0.851 km²) island belongs to the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area and is administered by the Department of Conservation and Recreation . It is across the Hull Gut deepwater canal and east of Nut Island and the Hough's Neck Peninsula across from the town of Hull .
At the east end of the island is Fort Andrews , which is no longer used today and served to defend the port area from 1904 until the end of World War II . There are a few privately owned cottages in the western part of Paddocks Island , as well as campsites near the fort to the east. Seasonal ferries operate between Peddocks Island and Georges Island .
history
Since the early 17th century, the island was mainly used for agriculture , but the military soon showed interest in the island. During the American Revolutionary War , over 600 militia soldiers were stationed there and in 1904 Fort Andrews was built in the eastern part , which served as an active defensive fortification of the port until the end of the Second World War . In 2008, 26 of the original buildings were still standing, but they are not accessible to the public due to the risk of collapse.
In 2008, Martin Scorsese shot scenes on the island for his film Shutter Island with Leonardo DiCaprio .
The island has been extensively renovated since 2011 and is therefore only accessible to a limited extent.
Natural resources
At the southern end of the island there is marshland with fresh water resources .
The most common trees and shrubs on the island are Norway maple , birch , oak , pine , poplar , rhus and apple trees . There are also wild roses and poison ivy .
