Hangman Island (also Hayman's Island , Hangamn Island or Hangmans Island ) is an island in Boston Harbor . It is located on Quincy Bay 7 mi (11.3 km ) from downtown Boston in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . Hangman Iceland has a permanent area of approximately 0.45 acres (0.2 hectares ), which through a watt , depending on the tidal range is temporarily increased by up to 5.5 acres (2.2 hectares). The island belongs to Quincy and is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area .
Hangman Island is geologically an outcrop of granite and slate . In the colonial times, the then much larger island was used as a quarry .
