Moon Island (also Half Moon Island ) is an island in Boston Harbor . It is located on Quincy Bay 5.5 mi (8.9 km ) from downtown Boston in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . Moon Island has a permanent area of approximately 45.7 acres (18.5 hectares ) and extensive tidal flats . The island belongs to Quincy and is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area .
Geologically speaking, the island is a drumlin and rises up to 98 ft (29.9 m ) and is not open to the public as there is a fire service training center and a police firing range.
