geography
geology
The island's northern drumlin , at 105 ft (32 m ), marks the highest point in the outer area of Boston Harbor. Between this and a smaller drumlin in the south there is marshland , which is regularly flooded at high tide . At low tide , a sandbar emerges in the southwest of the island that extends for approximately 1 mi (1.6 km) towards Georges Island . The island is surrounded by mussel beds that connect it to neighboring Little Brewster Island when the tide is low .
Flora and fauna
Apple and pear trees as well as rhus , potato roses , grasses and reeds grow on the island . The island's wildlife is still the subject of scientific research.
history
The island was named after William Brewster , the first preacher and teacher of the Plymouth Colony . Thousands of years earlier, the island was used by the Indians as a summer quarters and source of resources. Families living in the area later built summer houses there. During the Second World War , a military observation post was set up there, which had 90 mm cannons, searchlights and a command post for the minefield in the harbor basin.
