Raccoon Island ( German Raccoon Island ) is an island in Boston Harbor . It is located 7.8 mi (12.6 km ) from downtown Boston in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . Raccoon Island has an area of approximately 3.6 acres (1.5 hectares ), belongs to Quincy and is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area .
The island rises up to 30 ft (9.1 m ) above sea level and has been used by the Indians . In the 19th century their area was given as 10 acres (4 hectares).
