geography

geology

The island consists mainly of a single drumlin that towers up to 70  ft (21.3  m ) out of the water and is surrounded by a rocky shore. At low tide , Bumpkin Island is connected to Sunset Point in Hull by a sandbar .

Flora and fauna

There are some 100 year old trees on the island, including paper birch , pear and apple trees . There is also a single yew tree whose planting date is dated to the early 19th century. Most of the trees, shrubs and vines growing on the island are the result of succession from specimens planted in earlier years. The island's wildlife is still the subject of scientific research.

history

The island was already used for agriculture by the Indians and during the colonial times. An industrial fish drying facility was located on Bumpkin Island in the early 19th century, and fish was processed there in the early 20th century. The Boston philanthropist Albert Burrage founded a children's hospital on the island in 1900. During the First World War , a US Navy training camp was operated there, which was demolished again after the end of the war. In 1940 the hospital was reopened for people with poliomyelitis , but had to close again during the Second World War and burned down in 1945. Today only the ruins of an old farm remain on the island.

Attractions

On the island, the pier , a pump house , the ruins of former houses as well as the foundation walls of the former canteen and hospital are ideal places to visit.
