Snake Island (also Bare Island ) is an island in Boston Harbor . It is located in what is known as the Inner Harbor, 5.33 mi (8.6 km ) from downtown Boston in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . Snake Island has an area of approximately 3 acres (1.2 hectares ). The island belongs to Winthrop and is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area .
history
The island was named for its serpentine shape, which when viewed from the air can be associated with the typical locomotion of a snake. The island has had a number of owners since the beginning of colonization in the 17th century and was used for a wide variety of purposes, including as a pasture, recreational area for the residents of Winthrop and as a location for lobster fishermen.
