It is administered by the United States Coast Guard and is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area .

history
The island was named after William Brewster , the first preacher and teacher of the Plymouth Colony . It is well known for the lighthouse there , which has been in continuous operation since 1716, making it the oldest continuously used lighthouse in the United States. It was originally financed through a special tax of one penny per tonne of total weight, which had to be paid by all ships entering or leaving the port.
At the end of the American War of Independence , it was largely destroyed by the British fleeing Boston, but rebuilt in 1783. In 1859 it was increased by 14 ft (4.3 m) and reached its current height of 102 ft (31.1 m) above sea level, which allows its light to reach 27 mi (43.5 km ) into the Atlantic.
By the 1990s, the United States Coast Guard had automated all lighthouses nationwide except the Boston Light . Petitions from conservationists to the United States Congress and the Coast Guard have had an impact, so that separate funding has been allocated to maintain a manned station on the island to this day, where meteorological data is recorded and the lighthouse is kept in function .
The lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark in 1966 .
