Johannes Beck (Jesuit)

Johannes Beck SJ (born November 1, 1922 ; † May 9, 2020 in Unterhaching ) was a German Jesuit and social ethicist .

Life

Beck joined the Jesuit order in 1948 . After his theological training, he was ordained a priest on July 31, 1956 in the Jesuit Church of St. Michael in Munich .

He was particularly involved in workers' and industrial pastoral care and advocated social justice and Catholic social doctrine , especially for the principle of solidarity in large industrial companies. Among other things, he worked for many decades as a clerical adviser to the Catholic Workers' Movement (KAB) . As the successor to Franz Prinz SJ, he was in charge of the work group for Christian workers in Munich . From 1979 to 1991 Beck was director of the social seminar at Münchner Bildungswerk and, after his retirement from 1991 to 2012, was involved in teaching.

He lived in the Jesuit community Pedro Arrupe in the old people's and nursing home St. Katharina Labouré in Unterhaching near Munich. He died in May 2020 at the age of 97 in Unterhaching from the consequences of COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany .
