Mariä Himmelfahrt in Lorup is the parish church of the Catholic parish Mariä Himmelfahrt Lorup, which belongs to the dean's office Emsland-Nord of the Diocese of Osnabrück .

history

The church was built from 1834 to 1836 according to plans by the architect Josef Niehaus , who had previously been appointed building inspector of the Duchy of Arenberg-Meppen . The craftsmen who had previously built the St. Sixtus Church in neighboring Werlte were involved in the construction .

From 1958 to 1959 an annex was added to the south side, with the old church serving as the vestibule.

The neoclassical church hall in brick by pilasters divided between which round-arched are window. The choir is a separate component. The main portal is on the north side. A sturdy tower with a squat point is in front on the west side .

Furnishing

In Lorup, as one of the few in the region, the classical high altar from the time the church was built has been preserved. Corinthian columns carry a carved architrave on which there is a triangular pediment with acroteries , figures of angels and a crucifix . The center of the altar is an altarpiece depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary .

The oldest piece of furniture in the church is a carved oak Madonna from the mid-14th century. The organ dates from 1855.
