Johannes Bermudes
Johannes (João) Bermudes († 1570 in São Sebastião da Pedreira , Lisbon ) was a Portuguese military doctor and pseudo- patriarch of Ethiopia .
In 1520 Bermudes accompanied a Portuguese expedition to Ethiopia, remained there until 1536 as a hostage at the imperial court, then was sent to Europe with letters from the Ethiopian Emperor Lebna Dengel . From 1539 he appeared in Goa , Ethiopia (1541–1556) and Europe (from 1559) with feigned ordination as Patriarch of Ethiopia and Alexandria . He defended his claim with the book Breve relação da embaixada que o Patriarcha D. João Bermudes trouxe do Imperador de Ethyopia chamado vulgarmente Preste João (1565; reprinted Lisbon 1875). His deception lasted until it was exposed at the beginning of the 20th century .
