Michel van Esbroeck (born June 17, 1934 in Mechelen , † November 21, 2003 in Louvain-la-Neuve ) was a Belgian Jesuit and orientalist .

Life

From 1962 Esbroeck worked at the hagiographic Société des Bollandistes in Brussels , while he studied Armenian , Georgian , Coptic and Gyyz at the KU Leuven and the Université Saint-Joseph . In 1975 he defended his doctoral thesis Les plus anciens homéliaires géorgiens under the direction of Gérard Garitte . Étude descriptive et historique . He worked on sources in many countries including the USSR . He gave lectures in Rome and Paris . From 1987 to 1999 he was Professor of Eastern Christian Philology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .
