Johannes Cisnerus († 1620 ) was a German schoolmaster and pastor .

Life

Cisnerus came from Mosbach am Neckar from the famous family Cisnerus and was at the University in Heidelberg enrolled 1591-1596. From 1596 to 1598 he was a schoolmaster in Birstein and at the side of Pastor Anton Praetorius engaged in the fight against witch trials and torture .

From 1598 to 1599 Cisnerus was deacon and schoolmaster in Sprendlingen (near Alzey ), from 1599 to 1602 pastor in Würrich , 1602 to 1609 in Käferthal , 1609 to 1617 in Eppelheim and 1617 to 1620 hospital preacher in Heidelberg .

The theologian Anton Praetorius mentions him in his writing against witch trials (Thorough Report by Zauberey) from 1613 in an encrypted message:

"As I was told by M. Mennahoi Murensic and others that only the last woman is still alive ...". If you read the words Mennahoi Murensic from the back, you get: Johannes Cisnerus. M. means Magister (teacher).

This encryption was supposed to honor the dangerous commitment of Cisnerus against witch trials, but at the same time only make it recognizable for the initiated.
