Johannes Peter Franz Conrads , also Johannes Peter Franziskus Conrads , (born September 28, 1934 , † September 23, 2005 ) was a German physicist and university professor. His main research interests were in the field of plasma physics and nuclear fusion .

After studying at RWTH Aachen University , he received his doctorate in 1966 with a thesis on "The generation of series boundary continua with the help of sliding sparks for absolute measurement in vacuum ultraviolet" and then went to the Langley Research Center on a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Academy of Sciences UNITED STATES. There he constructed a plasma source with the help of which he artificially generated the spectral lines of the solar corona for the first time .

In 1969 he returned to Germany and from 1973 to 1992 headed the development and operation of the large fusion experiment TEXTOR at Forschungszentrum Jülich . In 1984/85 a research stay took him again to the USA, where he was involved in the construction of the TFTR ( Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor ) nuclear fusion reactor at Princeton University .

After German reunification, Conrads was appointed to the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald in 1992 and at the same time took over the management of the Institute for Low-Temperature Plasma Physics (INP) there. This continued the tradition of the former GDR Academy Institute for Gas Discharge Physics, which was founded in 1950 by Rudolf Seeliger . In addition to the renovation of the INP, Conrads was committed to the settlement of the Wendelstein 7-X fusion reactor , the Greifswald observatory and the Society of Friends and Supporters of the University.

In 2001 Conrads was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his development work in Greifswald . The Society of Friends and Patrons of the University awarded him honorary membership. In addition, the Greifswalder Sternwarte eV association has been awarding a “Johannes Conrads Prize” every two years since 2007 for theoretical and practical work in the field of astronomy .
