Johannes Dukas Batatzes ( Middle Greek Ἰωάννης Δούκας Βατάτζης ; * around 1215; † 1240 ) was a Byzantine aristocrat in the Empire of Nikaia and nephew of the eponymous emperor John III. Dukas Batatzes

Life

Johannes was a member of the prestigious Batatzes family of officers who provided three Byzantine emperors in the 13th century . He was the son of the Sebastokrator Isaak Dukas Batatzes and had a sister whose name was unknown. His wife Eudokia Angelina was the daughter of Megas Primikerios and Dux of Thrakesion Johannes Komnenos Angelos .

Little is known about Johannes' childhood and youth. After his uncle in 1221 (or 1222) as John III. Having ascended the throne in Nikaia , he was promoted to the circle of the highest dignitaries at court. According to a seal dated to the 13th century, like his father, he was sebastocrator. Johannes died in 1240 at the young age of about 25. His daughter Theodora († 1303), born in the same year, married the future emperor Michael Palaiologos in 1253 .
