John of Wales

John of Wales , OFM (* 13th century in Wales ; † 1285 in Paris ), also known as John Waleys , was a Franciscan who wrote various Latin works that were widespread in medieval Europe.

Life

He became a Franciscan at a very young age and received his doctorate in theology around 1260 . After that he was a teacher at Oxford University . In 1270 he went to Paris, where he stayed until his death. He was a theologian and moral theologian and admired the ancient world.

Works

He has written various works in Latin. His main works are the following:

  • Breviloquium de philosophia, sive sapientia sanctorum. Small treatise on philosophy , or wisdom of the saints; was translated into Catalan in the 15th century .
  • Compendiloquium . small summary of the history of philosophy.
  • Communiloquium or Summa collationum . A kind of manual for pastors and preachers; was also translated into Catalan in the 14th century .
