Johannes Helm (local history researcher)

Johannes Helm (born September 9, 1921 in Öpitz ; † June 11, 1998 in Müllheim (Baden) ) was a pedagogue and local researcher of the Markgräflerland .

Life

Helm came to Badenweiler for a short time during the Second World War in 1944 . After his release from captivity, he completed a teacher training at the educational academy in Lörrach . After completing his training, he became a teacher in Badenweiler and then in today's Badenweiler district of Schweighof. In 1966 he came back to Badenweiler, where he was rector of the primary and secondary school.

In 1951 he took over the office of district curator for prehistory and early history in what was then the district of Müllheim and offered tours of the Roman bath ruins in Badenweiler , which were later extended to include the Protestant church and the castle ruins . In 1960 he also became the district commissioner for nature conservation.

From 1963 to 1966 Helm was editor of the “Das Markgräflerland” magazine of the Markgräflerland history association . Helm was elected an honorary member of the history association. He also published numerous articles on local history in the Badenweiler Kurzeitung, the Badische Zeitung and the monthly magazine of the lever association of Müllheim, "The Margraviate".

His main work is the volume Kirchen und Kapellen im Markgräflerland , published in 1986 - an inventory of the still existing and expired church buildings on which he had worked for 30 years and which continues to be the main reference work on this topic.

Honors

In 1997 Helm was one of the recipients of the home medal of the state of Baden-Württemberg .
