Johannes Mühlenkamp

Johannes Mühlenkamp (born October 9, 1910 in Montigny near Metz ; † September 23, 1986 in Goslar ( Harz )) was SS standard leader of the Waffen-SS and in World War II commander of the 5th Panzer Regiment in the 5th SS Panzer Division " Wiking ” and, towards the end of the war, inspector of the tank troops in the SS headquarters .

Life

Johannes-Rudolf Mühlenkamp was born near Metz , in Lorraine , on October 9, 1910. He joined the SS standard "Germania" as a volunteer in September 1934 and was promoted to SS-Untersturmführer on April 20, 1936 after attending the SS Junker School in Braunschweig . He was a member of the NSDAP (membership number 2.800.042).

In 1936 Mühlenkamp came for further training in the army motorcycle rifle battalion and in spring 1938 took over the 15th company of the SS standard "Germania", which he led during the attack on Poland , during which he received both classes of the Iron Cross . With the SS disposal division he took part in the campaign in the west and then became commander of the reconnaissance department of the division renamed the SS division “Reich” in 1941 .

Promoted to SS-Hauptsturmführer on November 9, 1940 , Mühlenkamp led the reconnaissance department during the Balkan campaign and from June 1941 in the war against Russia . In October 1941 Mühlenkamp was seriously wounded in a grenade fire attack.

With the German cross in gold on January 2, 1942 , Mühlenkamp was promoted to SS-Sturmbannführer on January 30, 1942 . After his recovery he took over command of SS Panzer Division 5 in June 1942. After the attack on Rostov , he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on September 3, 1942 .

In March 1944, Mühlenkamp took over the 5th SS Panzer Regiment and on August 6, 1944, became the commander of the 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking". In this position he was involved in the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising . In October 1944 Johannes Mühlenkamp became inspector of the armored forces of the Waffen SS and at the beginning of 1945 briefly led the newly established 32nd SS Volunteer Grenadier Division “30. January " .
