Johannes Moth (born November 25, 1575 (not 1574) in Flensburg ; † January 17, 1642 there ) was a German teacher and pastor.

Live and act

Johannes Moth was a son of the barber and surgeon Paul Moth († March 8, 1597 in Flensburg) and his wife Margareta (* 1543). His mother was a daughter of the Flensburg mayor Volrad Schröder. From the spring of 1580 he attended a school in Flensburg. From 1591 he worked as a tutor to the councilor Reinhold tor Smede and taught one of his sons here. In March he took up a position at the Johanneum School of Scholars under the direction of Paul Sperling. He also worked as a tutor and taught a son of the councilor Caspar Moller.

In February 1596, Moth enrolled at the University of Helmstedt and studied theology there until at least the end of December 1598. Together with his former student Tor Smede, he went to Strasbourg in March 1599 . In March 1601 he was appointed master's degree here. In 1602 he went to Paris and Orléans with Tor Smede , where they lived for about half a year. Then Moth received an apprenticeship at the Academic Gymnasium in Strasbourg.

1603 Moth received a call as vice rector in Flensburg. A week after his arrival, he was introduced to office on October 14, 1603. The following year he was appointed rector. In the next few decades he received several appointments as pastor in the Duchy of Schleswig , which he did not follow. In 1626 he received a call as a deacon of the Nikolaikirche , where he worked from 1627.

During the occupation of Flensburg by Wallenstein's troops in 1627, he was the only remaining clergyman and provided full pastoral care. Because of his merits, he was appointed pastor at St. Mary's Church . Here he worked until the end of his life.

Works

Moth wrote several school books during his time as principal, most of which no longer exist. These contained native speaker sections in Low German . When High German found its way into the written language of Flensburg on a large scale, the Low German parts were abolished in 1638.

In addition, Moth wrote a school comedy in High German. When Christian von Anhalt visited Flensburg in 1622, the play was shown in the town hall and in the castle.

family

Moth married Susanna Gerhardi on October 9, 1608 (born September 30, 1589; † December 24, 1626). She was a daughter of the court preacher Nicolaus Gerhardi from Sonderburg. In his second marriage, he married Elisabeth Holländer on February 13, 1631 (* 1591; † July 30, 1651). Her father was the Lübeck physicist Petrus Holländer ( Petrus Budanus  ?). Moth's first marriage had three sons and two daughters, and the second marriage had a daughter. His son of the same name (1613–1657) became a pastor in Bordelum.
