from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Plücker (born December 2, 1711 in Elberfeld (today a district of Wuppertal ); † April 20, 1780 ibid) was a German businessman, politician and mayor of Elberfeld.

Plücker was born the son of the businessman and multiple councilor Karl Jakob Plücker (1689–1741) and his wife Anna Gertrud auf der Heyden (1692–1775) and was baptized on December 2, 1711. His paternal grandfather, Johannes Plücker (1656–1709) was mayor of Elberfeld in 1688, just like his father Johannes Plücker (1628–1680) was mayor in 1679. Just like the maternal grandfather Johann Wilhelm auf der Heyden (1661–1748) and both of Plücker's mother's great-grandfathers were all mayors of Elberfeld.

Plücker himself was also initially a merchant in Elberfeld when he was first elected to the city council in 1759 and 1760. In 1764 he was first proposed for the office of mayor of Elberfeld, but was only elected mayor the second time in 1767. In the following year he was city judge and then from 1769 to 1772 again a member of the council for Elberfeld.

He was married to Wilhelmina von Carnap (1726–1790), with whom he had seven children, four sons and three daughters.
