Wilhelm Rees (local history researcher)

Wilhelm Rees (born January 23, 1888 in Neuhückeswagen (Rhineland), † February 12, 1969 in Remscheid ) was a German teacher, local politician, local researcher and writer.

Wilhelm Rees studied in Bonn and Heidelberg and received his doctorate in Bonn in 1911 with the thesis The Declaration of Human and Civil Rights of 1789 for Dr. phil. During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students in Bonn . He then worked as a teacher in Remscheid. He entered the service of the city, was the first director of the Röntgen Museum in Lennep when it opened in 1932 , became director of the cultural office, and later he was head of the archives, city library and museum. He worked as a local researcher and published numerous books and magazine articles about Remscheid and Bergische history, landscape and culture, also in the magazine Rheinische Heimatpflege or for the Bergisches Geschichtsverein . There he is also co-author of the work Bergische Geschichte published in 1958 . He also published short stories and poems.

His extensive estate is located in the historical center of the city of Remscheid . In Remscheid, Wilhelm-Rees-Strasse in Ehringhausen was named after him. In 1952 he was the first director of the Roentgen Museum to be awarded the Roentgen Plaque of the City of Remscheid. The city of Remscheid named an art prize after him as the Wilhelm Rees Prize.
