Johannes Schickhardt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Schickhardt (* 1586 in Herrenberg ; † December 12, 1623 ibid) was a municipal clerk in Herrenberg who also held the offices of box keeper and cellar . He was a son of the builder Heinrich Schickhardt . and a younger brother of Lucas Schickhardt .

Life

Johannes Schickhardt was the second oldest son of Heinrich Schickhardt and his wife Barbara geb. Grüninger. After learning to be a writer, he worked as a municipal clerk in Herrenberg. On July 1, 1613, he married Brigitta Leyrer (1588–1638), a daughter of the respected and wealthy mayor and subordinate of Herrenberg, Bernhard Leyrer († 1602). On this occasion, a big wedding was organized for which Heinrich Schickhardt had to obtain permission from Duke Johann Friedrich because the number of wedding guests was generally limited to 60 people. The couple then lived in the upper Bronnengasse , in the large house of Heinrich Schickhardt, who by now lived in Stuttgart. The father gave the son the management of the house. Johannes Schickhardt held two municipal offices - box keeper and cellar - but this apparently did not satisfy his ambition (or that of his father). Heinrich Schickhardt tried to help him get a post in the ducal administration by writing a petition to the duke on March 14, 1615 with references to his own services. However, the request was unsuccessful.

Epitaph Johannes Schickhardt at the Herrenberg Collegiate Church (2017). The text of the now difficult to read inscription reads: IM IAR MDCXXIII D [E] N / XII. DECEMBRIS DIED / THE EHRNVEST VND VOR / GEACHT HERR IOHAN / SCHICKHART; BVRGER VND / KASTENPFLEGER ALHIE / ZV HERRENBERG, HIS / AGE IN XXXVII IAR, / TO GOT GNEDIG. // PHILIPP [ER] I: / CHRISTVS IS MY LIFE / DIE IS MY PROFIT.

Johannes Schickhardt died at the age of only 37. As the son of a very important Herrenberg personality, he was apparently buried in the churchyard at the collegiate church, although the Mühlhausen cemetery in front of the city gates was normally used for burials since the 16th century. A stone epitaph in his honor was attached to a wall in the southeastern outer area of the collegiate church. In order to better protect it from the weather, the now visibly attacked epitaph was removed in 1999 at the instigation of Dr. Martin Zeller moved to an outside niche on the north facade of the church.

After the early death of her husband, Brigitta Schickhardt married Johann Jakob Adelung from Stuttgart, who came to Herrenberg. Heinrich Schickhardt left his Herrenberg property to the two of them, but on the same terms as his other tenants. Johannes daughters, Anna Barbara and Brigitta, probably went several times to shorter stays with his cousin Wilhelm Schickard in Tübingen.

Since all of his children had already died, Heinrich Schickhardt decided Johannes' daughter Brigitta to be his universal heiress.
