Eigerøy fyr is a lighthouse on the southwest coast of Norway , about 8 km west of the city of Egersund in the municipality of Eigersund in the province of Rogaland .
geography
The 32.9 m high tower stands on rocky ground about 200 m north of the south end of the approximately 2000 m × 500 m large island of Midbrødøya, which is immediately in front of the much larger island Eigerøya to the west. The two islands are only separated from each other by a 20 m wide sound , the Nautasund, but connected by a bridge. Eigerøya in turn is connected to the mainland and thus to Egersund via the Eigerøy bru .
history
The lighthouse, a coastal fire with a diaphone , was put into operation in 1854 and secures shipping traffic along the coast . The 32.9 m high, conical, red and white painted tower, made of iron and brick, was the first in Norway to have a cast iron frame built by Bærums Verk . About 200 m to the north-west, a house, a machine house, further outbuildings and a boathouse with a jetty were built on the water. A lighthouse keeper's family lived in the keeper's house until 1989 ; then the beacon was automated.
The fire height is 46.5 m above high water. The flasher has had a first order Fresnel lens since 1897 with a light intensity of 3,905,000 cd and a range of 18.8 nautical miles .
Todays use
The lighthouse is still owned by the Kystverket , the state coastal administration. It has been under protection as a cultural heritage since 1999. The former residential building with its outbuildings and the boathouse with the landing stage, however, now belong to the Eigersund municipality. The lighthouse can be visited for a fee, a two-kilometer paved hiking trail from the parking lot at the bridge over the Nautasund.
