Johannes Schmid (born June 10, 1842 in Geislingen an der Steige , † December 25, 1923 in Tübingen ) was a German pharmacist.

Life

Schmid began his pharmaceutical training in the lower pharmacy in Giengen an der Brenz in 1856 . After completing his assistant exam, he worked in Wildbad, Stuttgart , Basel and Untertürkheim . From 1864 to 1865 he studied at the University of Tübingen , passed the pharmaceutical state examination there in 1867 and worked as an employee in Stade and Ulm .

After an educational trip that took him to Paris and Sweden in 1867 , he returned to Tübingen and was administrator of the John Pharmacy (now Trappsche Pharmacy) for six months. In 1868 he bought the pharmacy, which he later handed over to his son. In 1907 Schmid was awarded the title of court counselor. Together with Viktor von Bruns , he made the first attempts in his pharmacy laboratory in 1870/71 to make cotton wool. In order to obtain a hydrophilic cotton wool, the cotton was degreased with ether. The raw cotton was later degreased with a 4% soda solution in which the cotton was boiled. The first industrial production of this cotton wool was started by the Swiss entrepreneur Heinrich Theophil Bäschlin (1845–1887).
