Life

Born as the son of a farmer, Johannes Schmidt attended the Latin school of Allendorf pastor Friedrich Leinen, known as the "Allendorfer Gymnasium" , which prepared talented students from the Duchy of Westphalia for their studies. He then studied theology in Münster . In 1847 he founded the Catholic German Student Union Sauerlandia Münster , the second oldest Catholic student union, at the Royal Theological and Philosophical Academy there, together with Friedrich Wilhelm Grimme .

In 1851 Johannes Schmidt was ordained a priest and held the office until his death, most recently as pastor of St. Severinus in Calle . In this activity he also achieved fame in the whole of the Sauerland, especially due to his inclination to fooling around and lying fairy tales. This earned him the nickname "Lügenschmidt" or "Lügenpastor". Numerous anecdotes have been preserved in his notes and in the writings of Grimmes, who had been friends with him since his student days.
