Thome's research interests are diverse and focus on the (1) processes in the brain that take place at the cellular, genetic and molecular level when psychiatric disorders arise (e.g. depression , psychosis , adult ADHD , dementia ), (2) psychopharmacology and (3) interdisciplinary aspects of psychiatry, including psychopathology , neuropsychology and philosophy . To date, he has written and co-authored several books and around 250 articles in scientific journals (according to PubMed and Google Scholar). He is a member of the editorial board of several scientific journals and a regular reviewer of scientific manuscripts in the fields of psychiatry and neurosciences, as well as reviewer of research proposals submitted to national and international third-party donors for research funding.

Thome is or was chairman of the AGNP, general secretary of the World Federation of ADHD, member of the board of the UK Adult ADHD Network, active member in various psychiatric professional associations, received the Klinggräff Medal of the Stifterverein Alter Corpsstudenten and was involved in the organization of various psychiatric and psychiatric groups pharmacological research congresses.
