Johannes Tobler (entrepreneur)

John Tobler (* 16th March 1838 in depths ; † 1. January 1915 ibid ; heimatberechtigt in Teufen) was a textile businessman and politician from the canton of Appenzell Outer Rhodes .

Life

Johannes Tobler was the son of Martin Tobler, a textile manufacturer, and Anna Müller. In 1860 he married Karoline Grubenmann, daughter of Daniel Grubenmann, doctor and councilor. He attended primary school and took private lessons in Teufen. In 1855 he continued his education in Geneva . He trained in his father's weaving and rough embroidery . Tobler took over the company and, together with his brother-in-law Ulrich Zürcher, converted it into mechanical embroidery in 1870 . This made them one of the pioneers of mechanical embroidery in the Appenzellerland . His sons continued to run the company until 1932. Tobler also ran agriculture on the side and was a judge at the cantonal cattle shows. He served from 1863 to 1864 and from 1866 to 1868 as councilor in Teufen. From 1865 to 1868 he was a member of the Ausserrhoder Grand Council and from 1868 to 1874 he was part of the small council . Tobler acted as chief judge from 1873 to 1877. From 1886 to 1890 he was a member of the Ausserrhoder Cantonal Council , and finally he was a member of the government from 1893 to 1894 .
