Johannes W. Schäfer

Johannes Walter Schäfer (born June 28, 1960 in Bremerhaven ) is a German composer . He lives and works as a freelance composer and musician in Bremen .

Life and education

Schäfer's musical training ran from violin and guitar to double bass . He later learned piano , cello , viola , saxophone and bass clarinet in self-study . He completed a degree in philosophy and musicology at the University of Bremen and also heard composition with Erwin Koch-Raphael .

Since around 1975 Schäfer has been working on his first own compositions. He is particularly interested in new music , 12-tone music , serial music , electro-acoustic music but also in modern jazz . Johannes W. Schäfer mainly composes chamber music works, but also orchestral and choral works as well as film music. The compositions were performed by various performers in Germany and Europe.

In 2005 Johannes W. Schäfer won the 1st International Composition Competition in Dessau for the work: Schattenspiele, nachts op. 29a for bassoon and piano.

He received further prizes and awards as a bassist and composer in various jazz formations.
